In 1905, three children, Roberta, Phyllis and peter find that their lives change completely when their father Michael Kitchen, is escorted away to london by two mysterious gentlemen. Their possessions are sold and their mother takes them away to live in the country. With no money and no servants, the children learn to fent for themselves. The children become friendly with Mr Perks, the station porter, and their lives begin to revolve around the railway.
Jenny Agutter, who originally played Roberta in the classic 1970 film, returns memorably to play the part of the mother.
